Frequently asked questions

The minimum age is 12 years accompanied by a guardian or an adult. The limit for traveling alone and/or participating in regattas is 15 years. We have zero tolerance for alcohol consumption when the ship is at sea. This also applies in foreign ports for fellow sailors under the age of 18. On some sailings we have an age limit of 8 years when sailing with a guardian or another adult. Children from 8 - 11 years old cannot climb in the rig. It is not possible to sail with us if you are under the age of 8.

A voyage with Christian Radich is not a typical holiday—it is an experience out of the ordinary. You travel slowly, getting close to the sea and nature in a truly immersive way.

As a participant, you join the ship as a co-sailor and take part in life on board. This includes contributing to daily tasks and sailing operations. Under the guidance of the professional crew, you may:
• Steer the ship
• Work with sails in the rig (for those seeking an extra challenge)

Life on Board

Accommodation is in a shared sleeping area (a large dormitory), where you sleep in either:
• Fixed bunks
• Hammocks

Upon arrival, you are assigned to one of three watch teams:
• 00:00 – 04:00 / 12:00 – 16:00
• 04:00 – 08:00 / 16:00 – 20:00
• 08:00 – 12:00 / 20:00 – 24:00

You will receive necessary training in:
• Sea watches
• Safety procedures
• Rig operations

Sailing and Responsibilities

Once at sea, the ship depends on cooperation from all co-sailors to:
• Set sails
• Perform maneuvers
• Keep the ship moving forward

The more people who participate—especially in the rig—the better the sailing performance.

It is a truly magical moment when the engine is turned off and the ship sails under full canvas.

If you prefer not to climb the rig, simply inform a watch leader. However, participation is encouraged.

Important:
You are not allowed to enter the rig if you are using medication marked with a red triangle (e.g. certain seasickness medications).

• Reports observations such as boats, fishing gear, whales, or debris

Health Requirements and Participation

Anyone in generally good health can sail with Christian Radich. A key part of the experience is that the ship sails as much as possible, which requires active participation from all co-sailors.

All participants are expected to:
• Contribute on board
• Be active during their watch shifts

Most participants are also encouraged to climb the rig. If you prefer not to, simply inform the crew.

Rules for Climbing the Rig

To enter the rig, the following requirements apply:
• You must be able to hang with straight arms and support your full body weight for at least 20 seconds
• Minimum age: 12 years
• Only safety harnesses and equipment provided on board may be used
• Private climbing gear is not permitted
• If the available safety harness does not fit (too small or too large), climbing is not allowed

Seasickness medication:
• You must wait 48 hours after removing a seasickness patch
• Or 48 hours after taking your last seasickness tablet
• Only after this can you enter the rig or work at height

Before climbing, all participants must complete rig training, usually provided within the first 24 hours on board.

Health Considerations

If you have any health limitations, these must be carefully assessed in advance. Conditions that are manageable on land may be amplified at sea, especially in rough weather.

All participants are expected to be able to take care of themselves, as the crew does not have capacity to provide individual assistance.
• Participants using wheelchairs or crutches cannot join voyages
• All allergies and medications must be reported before departure
• Be aware that medications may lose effectiveness if you become seasick

If you use seasickness medication, inform the sergeant and watch leader on board.

For serious allergies or medical conditions requiring special consideration, contact:
postmaster@radich.no

Age Requirements

Participants over 67 years old must provide:
• A health declaration
• A medical certificate (required for overseas voyages)

Separate rules apply for Atlantic crossings.

Safety and Responsibility

If it is later discovered that important health information has been withheld, and a participant becomes:
• A significant burden to others
• A risk to themselves or others

The captain may disembark the individual at a suitable time and place. Any additional travel costs must be covered by the participant.

Vaccinations

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health recommends vaccines for travel to certain regions.

Recommendations depend on:
• Destination
• Accommodation type
• Hygiene conditions
• Length of stay

If you plan to travel before or after your voyage, consult official vaccination guidelines.

In order for everyone's experience on board to be as safe as possible, it is essential that everyone familiarizes themselves with and respects the ship's safety rules. Study the ship's safety plan on the forward deck and familiarize themselves with the location of rescue equipment on board. Sitting on the railing is not permitted for safety reasons. Do not run on deck and walk carefully on ladders. Rig training must always take place with a permanent crew. Loose objects, such as mobile phones, sunglasses and the like, must be removed. Glasses must be secured with a cord. Fellow sailors may only enter the rig when asked to do so, or with permission from the officer on duty or the watch manager. Please note that medication loses its effectiveness when seasick. Remember to inform the sergeant and the watch officer on board if you are using seasickness tablets or seasickness patches (we recommend patches that are available on prescription). Seasickness medications and rig work. After professional assessment by a pharmacist, it is estimated that the risk of side effects (and therefore a ban on working at height) when using Scopoderm Depotplaster 1 mg/72 hours (scopolamine) is over after 48 hours from “patch removal”. For Postafen 25mg (meklozine) tablets for seasickness, 48 hours after “taking the last tablet” applies. Exempt from this are individuals with abnormalities in liver or kidney function.

The most important thing to remember when packing is waterproof and windproof. Even though it is summer, it can be cold at sea, especially on night shifts. Here is a list of what we recommend:

  • Passport, even when sailing between Norwegian ports.
  • Light / thin sleeping bag
  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • Beanie
  • Mittens
  • Toiletries
  • Sunloition
  • Sunglasses
  • Shoes with good rubber soles or boots
  • Towel
  • Personal medications
  • Eye mask and earplugs
  • Mobile charger
  • Small backpack
  • Clothes that can withstand stains

Pack in a bag that fits in your locker. The locker holds 120 liters. A small lock for your locker if you wish (can also be purchased on board). The reason why a passport is necessary is that there are separate rules for border control at sea and that on most cruises we pass the Schengen outer border which is defined as 12 nautical miles from land. This applies even if we sail between two Norwegian ports. Reference: Border Act

Kiosk on board

In the kiosk you can buy snacks, chocolate products, mineral water, toiletries and souvenirs.

Laundry facilities

Unfortunately, there are no laundry facilities on board. For longer cruises, you will receive information about laundry facilities when you are on board.

Mobile phone and electricity

Mobile phone has no coverage when we are at sea. Should a situation arise where contact with shore is necessary, the ship and the office are helpful. We have 220 V power supply.

Seasickness and drugs

Remember to inform the sergeant and the watch officer on board if you are using seasickness tablets or seasickness patches (we recommend patches that are available on prescription). If you are using seasickness medication, you cannot participate in rig climbing for a certain time after taking it.

At sea, we have a "dry" ship, i.e. no alcohol is allowed for all fellow sailors when the ship is underway. For fellow sailors under 18 years of age, this also applies in foreign ports.
