Yard in 1937. She was built as a sailtraining ship: the orlops (dormitories) had capacity for berthing 80-90 students (maximum 80 today after renovation), a large galley, for learning to cook, carpentry training, and earlier there was also a machine shop on board (where the galley is now) for the training of engineers. The purpose of the training ship was to train sailors. Sailing-ships were the usual vessels around the turn of the century and that is why the sailing ships continued as a school ship later on. The Foundation The foundation’s purpose is to preserve Christian Radich for future generations through active operation and primarily as a school ship. The ship is also used for other purposes, such as voyages for trainees of all ages and for charter. The ship is a great ambassador for Norway The ship is sailing with a crew of 15 persons, some extra crews members will be taken on for the summer season. The crew consist of norwegians, swedish, danish, and dutch, men and women – a fantastic team, working on one of the world`s most special vessel. On land, at Skur 32 on Akershusstranda, you will find the office members of the Foundation. Today we are a total of 4 employees.
The Friends of Christian Radich is one of the vessels most important supporters. Their contributions to the Foundation ensure that the vessel may operate actively sailing and to keep up the high standard on board. The membership shows that you care for the vessel. There are four different types of membership: Single member NOK 290, – a year Family member NOK 490, – a year Member for life NOK 5000, – Company (up to 50 employees) NOK 2500, – a year Company (from 50 employees and up) NOK 5000, – a year As a member you get our newsletters, you get 10% reduction when buying souvenirs, you are invited to an annual day-cruise and you receive a special pin and Christian Radich pen. The ship, nearly 70 years old, needs to be continuously maintained and restored to avoid that she ends up as an anchored museum. She represents a culture and maritime tradition worth taken care of.
